Earlier this year the Central Massachusetts AIA put out a call for volunteers for its Programming Committee. LPA architect, Leo Parker was looking to get more involved with the organization, eager to support and advance the design community in Central Massachusetts. The Programming Committee coordinates professional development and networking opportunities for architects in the region. One recent program provided participants with a tour of the LEED-certified Clark University Alumni Student Engagement Center, led by the architect.
“As architects we have a unique opportunity to participate in the conversations that help create a better living environment, said Leo. “Getting involved with the Programming Committee at AIA has been one way to advance these important discussions.”
In addition to participating in the Programming Committee, Leo has more recently joined the Executive Committee which is currently focused on their annual awards event to recognize and raise awareness of architectural achievements here in Central Massachusetts.
A recent article in Worcester Magazine highlighting the Leadership Worcester program and Coordinator Sara Shugrue recognizes LPA Architect Peter Caruso as an example of a successful program participant, highlighting Peter’s involvement in the community.
Sara says in the article, “Peter Caruso is an architect from Lamoreux Pagano. He is an experienced professional who participated in last year’s class. He was super interested right from the beginning. He immediately found a way to use his new skill set in the community.”

LPA and Fontaine Brothers teamed up this spring on a fundraising effort to support Recreation Worcester, a program of the City of Worcester that offers recreational, educational, and enrichment opportunities through summer camps and after-school programs. LPA and Fontaine Brothers kicked off the fundraising effort by making donations to Recreation Worcester and reaching out to all the companies that have been working on the Nelson Place Elementary School Project. Because of the firms’ work on the soon-to-be completed building, they have seen both the need and the value of programs like Recreation Worcester.
More than two dozen companies contributed funds to the cause, raising $30,000 for the program, enough to fund one site for a year.
LPA Vice President Katie Crockett has been promoted to Executive Vice President, joining the company’s board of directors and taking on additional leadership responsibilities at the firm. Katie joined the firm in 1986, became a Principal in 1999, and was named Vice President in 2013. In Katie’s thirty years with the firm she has increasingly taken on more management responsibilities and has been an integral part of many high profile projects.
“Katie’s strong leadership and management skills have been considerable assets for LPA, and as she steps into this expanded role, I anticipate that LPA’s successful track record and list of happy clients will continue to grow,” said Mike Pagano, President of LPA.
Katie is an active member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and has served on the Massachusetts, New England and Central Massachusetts AIA Boards. Additionally she has served as an advisor and board member on a number of community and professional organizations including Mechanics Hall, Higgins Armory, Hope Lodge, Worcester Community Action Council, and Worcester Technical High School. Last year Katie was recognized by the Worcester Business Journal as an Outstanding Woman in Business.
Leadership Worcester held the graduation ceremony for its class of 2017 this past May at the Worcester Art Museum. The class of 24 professionals with demonstrated leadership potential met monthly from September through May. Each member of the class was asked to make a declaration at the event of how they would apply what they learned through their participation in the program.
This past May the New England Chapter of the Construction Management Association of America recognized the Shrewsbury Public Library Project in the category of Renovation/Modernization under $20 million. The team, including the Town of Shrewsbury as the owner, PMA Consultants as owners project manager, LPA as the architect, and Fontaine Brothers as construction manager received the award the CMAA annual awards luncheon. The Shrewsbury Library re-opened to the public this past September, on schedule and under budget.
At a well-attended tour of the Nelson Place Elementary School this past June, members of the Massachusetts Chapter of the USGBC (Green Buildings Council) learned about some of the many energy efficiency measures taken in the design and construction of the new school, scheduled for completion this August.
Sponsored by LPA, Nitsch Engineering, the Green Engineer, and Forbo Flooring Systems, the event was an opportunity for attendees to get a preview of the building and learn about some of the sustainable design features, including super insulated windows, photovoltaic solar panels, waste management/recycling, and low VOC (volatile organic compound) paints and coatings, flooring materials, adhesives and sealants. The project is targeting LEED Silver Certification.
The historic Boylston Public Library has re-opened to the public after a significant renovation project, for which LPA served as the Owners Project Manager over the past 18 months. The project included landscaping and doubling the size of the parking lot; updated HVAC and lighting systems; a new wheelchair lift and staircase, as well as complete renovation of the lower level of the building.
Just a few weeks later, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Leicester Public Library for the renovation of their historic building. LPA was hired to serve as OPM for this project in early 2016. The July event marked the beginning of the construction phase for this important project for the Town of Leicester.
Technological advances, scientific breakthroughs, new ways of learning and working; progress in every realm is made possible by the sharing of information and ideas. As innovation has become the key to success in the economy and the workplace, our work spaces and educational environments are being transformed to emphasize collaboration, hands-on learning, and entrepreneurial thinking. This development can be seen a number of different kinds of facilities, from workplaces to higher education, to libraries and K-12 schools; more and more buildings are being designed to foster collaboration and encourage chance interactions.
Threshold requirements for public construction projects were among the dozens of changes in the “Municipal Modernization Act” passed late last year. The intent of the law was to streamline processes and offer greater flexibility to municipalities.
The sections of the law relating to public construction procurement allow cities and towns to award contracts under $50,000 without going through a formal competitive bidding process. Larger projects must still undertake the formal process, and unchanged is the requirement to engage the services of an Owner’s Project Manager on projects over $1.5 million.
The City of Fitchburg has selected LPA to conduct a feasibility study for the renovation or replacement of the City Hall building at 718 Main Street. Originally built in 1852, the historic building has been vacant due to safety concerns since 2012.
Work is also getting underway on a feasibility study for the City of Marlborough’s Elementary School options. Representatives of the City and the Massachusetts School Building Authority selected LPA for the project this past January, which will determine whether to renovate and expand or replace the existing school.
